'Negative' which does just what it says, with no options 'Grayscale' which includes brightness and intesity options 'Cutout' which is similar to a 'Posterization' filter with a slider for number of levels 'Contrast' which includes both a contrast slider and a brightness slider 'Color Adjustments' which lets you adjust the Red, Green, and Blue channels independently, so it's good for color balance adjustment 'Chromaticity' which includes hue and saturation I won't go into each one in detail since they are fairly straightforward. PhotoPad provides 9 'filters' in the Tools menu. You are editing only the iPad's jpg copy of your raw file. They call this the 'Raw Size.' This is not to be confused with the size of the raw file if you are shooting with a camera that can save a raw file. There is also an entry for the uncompressed size of the image in MB. This is useful before posting an image on sites like SmugMug.įinally, the Image Properties tool shows you the dimensions of your image (in pixels,) the total size of your image (in MegaPixels,) the depth of your image in bits per pixel, and also shows a histogram of your image. The Scale tool allows you to rescale the size (in pixels) of your image. It does include mirror options and fixed 90 degree rotations. It would help to have some sort of guide lines to allow straightening horizons or buildings and things in your image. Rotate works OK, but I found that it's a little too sensitive and difficult to get things lined up. The Paint Bucket tool is similarly full-featured and includes a fill tolerance as well as the ability to do continguous fill (paint bucket) or non-contiguous fill (color swap.) It also has four brush shapes with a size slider and the ability to erase your brush strokes without affecting the underlying image, until you tap the check mark, when your brush strokes become part of your image. The Paint Brush also works well and includes color selection via presets, RGB sliders, HSI sliders as well as a color wheel. There are no fixed aspect ratios, just crop as you like. You move the crop window as you need by dragging the corners. The Crop tool works smoothly, easily, and intuitively. There are 6 tools available 'Crop,' 'Paint Brush,' 'Paint Bucket,' 'Rotate,' 'Scale,' and 'Image Properties.' These are pretty self-explanatory.

If you decide you don't want to use that tool after all, or don't like your changes, you can click on the 'X' at the top left of the screen to cancel the tool. Once you are satisfied with your changes, you tap the checkmark at the top right of the screen and your changes will be applied. You then select a tool to use and make the adjustments available in the tool (usually with a slider.) The changes you make are quickly previewed on a full-size version of your image. You start by selecting an image to edit from the 'Images' menu. In portrait orientation, the whole screen is the image area and the menu options now include an additional tools option rather than having it always on the left side of the screen.

With the iPad in landscape orientation, the app has an image area on the right, a menu bar on top with 'Images,' 'History,' and 'Save' options, and a tools menu on the left. So far though, I haven't seen any ads or buying options in the app. Zagg plans to sell products directly from the app at some time in the future, which explains why they are offering it for free. PhotoPad is very basic image editing software, but is effective for when you want to upload photos to your iPad using the Camera Connection Kit, do some basic cropping, exposure adjustment, etc., and then post the image on your favorite photo or social networking site.
